E-MAIL TUTORIAL

E-mail Tutorial Parts Labeled:

To -Here's where you type the recipient's e-mail address. An e-mail address has to have their chosen e-mail name, @ and the suffix for whichever e-mail service they use. (Example: chickenlittle@aol.com) Note: There are no spaces in an e-mail address.

Cc/or Copy To -This stands for carbon copy and is where a secondary recipient's e- mail address is typed.

Subject -The purpose of the Subject Box is to help the recipient prioritize which e-mails to open first. Some services require that you type in a subject. A simple "Hello" will do.

Text Box -This is where the body of your e-mail is typed. Note: The Tab key on your keyboard works differently while on the Internet. Use it to move from one text box to another, not to indent.

Menu Bar -Feel free to click on each item in your Menu Bar to experiment with what it has to offer. Example: If you click on Tools, a drop menu will appear where you can click Spelling to see if you have any boo-boos in your e-mail.

Tool Bar (Indicated on Outlook only) -Many things offered in a text format in the Menu Bar can also be utilized in a visual format (through icons) in the Tool Bar. For example: There is a Spelling icon here that will accomplish the same task as clicking on Tools and then Spelling in the Menu Bar.

Tool Bar (Indicated on both AOL and Outlook above Text Box) -Customize your font by clicking on the down arrow to the right of the style or size and then click on your choice. If you click on B, the text will be bold, I makes the text italics and U underlines the text. Note: If you want to change existing text you need to highlight it first.

Send/Send To -Click here when your e-mail is complete and you want to send it on its way.

Address Book -An address book of e-mail addresses allows you to access an address rather than having to remember it and/or type it in each time.

Send Later -This button will let you hold an e-mail you've written to be sent at a later time.

Close Box -The Close Box functions as it does in any window. If you click it, the window will close.

Maximize Box -Click the Maximize Box to make the window as large as possible. The advantage is that enlarging the window may eliminate the need for a scroll bar.

Attach -You can attach documents, photos or even sounds that are on your computer to an e-mail. It is the same theory as paperclipping something to a letter and, honestly, not much more difficult once you get the hang of it.

Scroll Bar -A scroll bar indicates that the window has more to offer than you can see. If the e-mail is lengthy, it may have a scroll bar. If the scroll bar is ignored, you'll end up not reading the entire e-mail.

Reply -Click this to write a response to an e-mail you've received. The original sender's e-mail address will automatically be in the To: Box.

Reply All -Click on Reply All to send an e-mail response to the sender and anyone else that received that e-mail (all those in the To: and Cc: boxes).

Forward -This allows you to forward an e-mail you have received to someone else.
